Custom domains for the chat page

Every project has a chat page, where your client can message you and see their tasks outside the Squarespace editor. With a custom domain, that page lives at your client's own address, like portal.theirsite.com, instead of a Squarepaste link.

Who Can Use It

Custom domains are included on the Connect and Atlas plans, and with Lifetime Access. On the Link plan, the chat page uses its Squarepaste link.

Connecting a Domain

  1. Open the project and go to the Actions tab
  2. Click Chat page
  3. Under Custom domain, enter the address you want, like portal.theirsite.com, and click "Connect domain"
  4. Add the CNAME record shown to the domain's DNS, wherever your client's domain is managed (Squarespace Domains, GoDaddy, Cloudflare and so on). If their provider supports it, "Connect automatically" adds the record for you.
  5. Wait for the badge to show the domain is live, or click "Check now"

The record points your chosen name at portals.squarepaste.com. It usually goes live within an hour, and the secure certificate (https) is set up for you.

Use a Subdomain

Use a subdomain, such as portal.theirsite.com or chat.theirsite.com, not the bare domain (theirsite.com). The bare domain already points at your client's Squarespace site, and it can't hold the record the chat page needs.

Removing a Domain

In the same panel, click "Remove". The chat page goes back to its Squarepaste link. You can then delete the CNAME record from the domain's DNS.

Tip: Ask your client before you add a record to their domain. If you don't manage their DNS, send them the record from the panel and they can add it themselves.
