Domain verification
Squarepaste checks where its widget is loaded, so your widget code only works on the Squarespace site it belongs to. Anywhere else, the widget stays hidden.
How Domain Verification Works
When you add a Squarespace site to Squarepaste:
- The project is tied to the site's built-in Squarespace domain (yoursite.squarespace.com)
- The widget code carries your project's ID
- When it loads, the widget checks that the page is that project's built-in domain and that the Squarespace editor is open
- Anywhere else, including your live site and any other domain, it stays hidden
This means Squarepaste only appears to you and your client while you work on the site in Squarespace. Clients who don't have Squarespace access can use the project's chat page instead, found under the project's Actions tab → Chat page.
Connecting with Squarespace
When you use "Connect Squarespace Site":
- You sign in to Squarespace and pick a site you have access to
- Only sites you have access to in Squarespace can be added this way
- Squarepaste fills in the site's details for you
Adding a Site Manually
When you use "Add a site manually":
- You enter the site's built-in Squarespace domain yourself
- Squarepaste generates widget code for that project
- The widget checks the domain every time it loads
Domain Matching
Squarepaste checks the domain by:
- Reading the exact domain where the widget is loaded
- Matching it against the built-in domain saved on your project (with or without www)
- Staying hidden on any domain that doesn't match
Private Projects
If a project is set to private, the widget also stays hidden from anyone who hasn't signed in to Squarepaste as an invited member of that project.
Security Benefits
Domain verification provides several security benefits:
- Prevents your widget code from working on someone else's site
- Keeps the widget off your live site, so visitors never see it
- Ensures conversations only happen on your authorized sites
- Maintains the integrity of your client communications
Adding New Domains
To add a new Squarespace site:
- Go to your Squarepaste dashboard
- On Projects, click "Add project"
- Choose Squarespace
- Click "Connect Squarespace Site" (recommended) or "Add a site manually"
- Fill in Project details, then follow the Install step
Troubleshooting Verification Issues
If the widget isn't appearing where you expect:
- Make sure the project uses the site's built-in .squarespace.com domain
- Open the site in the Squarespace editor, not the live site
- Check that the widget code is installed correctly
- Make sure your subscription plan supports the number of projects you're trying to add
- Contact support if it still doesn't appear
Domain verification is automatic and happens in the background. You don't need to do anything special–just add your Squarespace site through the dashboard.
